 Cute Free ScreensaverA cute free screensaver has played a part in the computer scene since the beginning. A lot of folks who are online today don't really understand how important a role they played.
In the earlier computers, lets say before the late 80s early 90s, the monitor picture tube or CRT as it is called was likely to be harmed by something called burn-in. This term describes what happened when a picture remained still too long on the screen. The image would harm the particles on the CRT. This event would seriously impair the performance of the monitor in casting an image on the screen for the user.
A cute free screensaver was designed to self activate if the same picture remained on the screen, or if the keyboard was not touched for a designated period of time. Thus the program would start up and 'save' the screen from harm.
As time progressed into the 90s and beyond computers and monitors became smarter. Monitors were developed that would automatically go into a sort of sleep mode blanking the screen if there was a period of inactivity. A simple movement of the mouse re-activated the monitor. This development made a cute free screen saver obsolete.
These programs refused to die a quiet death in online neverland. Instead they became the pretty pictures of quiet time for computers. To my way of thinking,the aquariums with their gurgling sounds were the most popular downloads of all fun screensavers. I am quite sure that in one of the drawers on my computer hutch resides a floppy with an aquarium cute free screensaver on it.
