Fun World Records

Fun world records have been kept since around 3500BC. These early records were for Kings to keep track of land, armies, crops, and ore. We can speculate that early records of this type were perhaps for the farmer with the biggest crop, or the soldier with the most kills in battle. They were rewarded by higher placement in the society.

As history of records develops, competition in sporting type events becomes popular, creating fun world records for the entertainment of the ruling classes. an example of this kind of record is the Roman Coloseum gladiator fights. The best of the fighters would be granted a record for their world accomplishment....and perhaps their life.

Moving forward with historic records, groups and countries developed competition in such events as long distance running. Events were held within the Grecian City States to denote the first of Olympic world record competition.

The modern fun world records really begin with schools and colleges competing with each other in the later times. People started keeping track of all sports and other competitions, creating bizarre, hilarious, and sometimes worthless records. these activities led to the creation of a well known book titled Guinness Book of records.

This book revolutionized record keeping. Fun record attempts of all kinds were recorded. many of these records were silly in their origin. an example of this kind of silly record would be the worlds largest ball of string, or the largest structure made entirely of toothpicks.

Recently, the folks at Guiness have chosen to limit the types of records that they will publish in their book. This was done due to the dangerous nature of some of the attempts that were undertaken to create new records.

All kinds and types of fun competition are reported across the World Wide Web. you can find such events as, tire rolling in junkyards, or the popular eating the most hot dogs at one sitting. If it can be done, you will likely find it on the web.

To showcase some of the more ludicrous, inane, and humorous types of fun world record attempts, we present a collection of sites dedicated to fun world records.
