Hobby RC Car
The sport of running and racing radio controlled cars...the hobby rc car... has been active since the mid 60s. The hobby encompasses both electric and gas powered versions of replica cars, exotic sports cars, off road trucks, racing vehicles and even tractor-trailer combinations. Early companies such as Model Car enterprises, WEN, and Dynamic Models were starting to produce car kits.
This activity grew through the latter part of the decade until the mid 70s when a company called Tamiya released their first electric motor powered car, a 1/12th scale of the Porsche Turbo. The cars of this era were designed to run on parking lots and other smooth surfaces. Tamiya followed up their success with other models including the Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari and other replicas.
In the late 70s Tamiya brought out the Rough Rider. this was a true off road model capable of running in dirt and rocks. This was a boon to the hobby because now almost any area could be an arena for the hobby rc car sport.
The 80s saw an huge expansion of the hobby as dedicated tracks began to be popular places to hold meets and run races. In the mid 80s the 1/10th scale model championship races were held and a car produced by Associated Electrics won the world championship. The Tamiya company produced a four wheel drive vehicle they dubbed the Hot Shot. This model became a boon to off road.....off smoothth surface racing. In 1988 the first 1/8th scale championship races were held. These vehicles were beasts and could do up to 40mph off road.
The 90s saw a further expansion of the hobby rc car phenomena as electric cars became common in the driveways of American homes.
Now, in 2005, we have an incredible depth to the hobby. Almost every city has an organized track..many of them indoors for year round racing. Boys race their inexpensive hobby rc car electric models in each others driveways and yards. There is a wide price range of vehicles available from about $35.00 up to many hundreds of dollars for a tractor trailer combination. Some of these youngsters with their toy style hobby rc car machines will be the champions of the future.

In 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright succeeded in flying the first airplane. It is true that this first plane only flew a few feet. ....The world had changed forever. It is interesting to recall that in this era of the early 20th century, most people lived and died only having travelled a few miles from the place of their birth. Now we can actually fly across the Atlantic Ocean...or across the country in a few hours. About 20 years or so after the Wright flight the first model airplane was built. A new hobby was born. One can only wonder how many boys who flew model planes with their dads became pilots. The hobby has grown to include flying clubs and meets where the planes are displayed and flown for the enjoyment of all. Please visit RC Hobby Planes.
