One of the fine international world museums, is located in the Capital city of Canberra Australia This is a marvelous institution that explains the history, customs, lands, flora and fauna, and peoples of this wonderful land. Australia was claimed for the British Crown in 1770 by the english explorer Captain James Cook. In 1778 a fleet of ships bearing approximately 1600 people (including convicts) arrived in what is now Sydney harbor. This is the date that all australians mark as the national birthday. The rise of the wool industry, and the discovery of gold in the 1850s brought an influx of free people to bolster the population. The nation was founded in 1901 as a Commonwealth of 6 states under a constitution. The museum is a national treasure for Australians, and a great place to learn about Australia.
