Library Online Reading

old man

Welcome to Library Online Reading. Back in the ancient mists of time people began to gather together into groups which became tribes. The earliest groups were probably hunter gatherers moving from place to place according to the available food supply.

As these early humans learned the art of herding animals they became more settled. It was important for the cohesiveness of the group to provide a means of generational continuence of the social and economic ways of the tribe.

Certain older males in the tribe were entrusted with the task of passing on the oral traditions of the tribe to the young. These tribal elders would go from campfire to campfire teaching the ways of the people. They held in their minds the repository of the history and cultural mythos of the people of the tribe. They were in fact oral librarians. You could say that they were the first people to have library online reading in a person to person manner.

These ancient tribes began to gather together into larger tribal communities. They became more settled and less nomadic in their cultural and economic development. Some of these early communities began to encourage trade with other early settled communities. The communities that existed near great rivers and fertile river valleys grew faster than those communities in less settled areas.

In Library Online reading, we take you to the first real city state presumed to be that of UR which became prominent in the fertile crescent of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. UR was founded around 5000BC.

As trade grew in economic importance it became necessary to provide a means of keeping track of the various transactions. This need inspired the invention of writing and the ability to find it in a library.

Archeological records indicate that by 2100 BC the Sumerians had organized their collections of records of purchase and collection of goods for tax purposes in one place. This made it possible for more orderly record keeping. It is apparent that these early collections were organized into various classifications according to subject and content. Exploring these collections dealing with accounting and taxation we find in fact in fact the first ability to find it in a library. Though, of course, there was no library online reading.

The growth of these city states led to an increase in competition for territory. As one king would rise in power, others would decline in what appears to be a never ending struggle for territorial dominance. It was the common practice of the winner of these struggles to seek to destroy the cultural heritage of the invaded territory. This was because the new ruler wanted his culture to prevail over the new subjects. This is the reason why few of the ancient city libraries survived intact.

Gradually, as stronger rulers emerged, the city states were assimilated into what became nations. King Ashurbanipal of Ninevah created the first great central place where his subjects could search for information and find it in what amounted for that time to library online reading. The library contained such works as the Epic Of Gilgamesh and the Epic of Creation among other early great writings. The king gathered together materials from exploring libraries of nations he had plundered and added them to his own collection. This was done so that people could find it in a library with his name on it. His library also contained dictionaries translating texts from Sumerian into Akkadian.

It is not our task here to explore a comprehensive history of the ancient libraries of the world. In fact we want to present to you places in the modern era where you can find library online reading. We have tried to offer some background on the development in early humanity of the need to pass on information to future generations. We also wanted to relate to our readers the early needs for record keeping and exploring libraries and archiving of materials of cultural treasures in a central location.

It is these elements that have led us to travel all over the world in search of information. If its available, you can find it in Library Online Reading.
