Perhaps the earliest practitioner of magic trick and illusion was the court jester. This was purely a performance role as entertainer for royalty rather than that of a full magician.
As we pass into more modern times we begin to see the magician developing into a public performer. The first real modern magic trick and illusuion was performed by a man named Houdin who worked in France in the early to mid 1800s. It was around this time that the public began to pay to see the magician perform his act.
In the 20th century it was Houdini who became the great historical figure. He was probably the greatest escape artist of all time. The mid 20th century invention of television allowed the performance to be viewed by a huge unseen audience. Thus began the spectacular shows we are all familiar with today. Still, in small clubs in cities like Las Vegas, you will find magicians performing card tricks,disappearing coin tricks and other sleight of hand maneuvers, along with the famous linking rings trick. The art of magic trick illusion has never been as popular as it is today.
